[Update] Review: Uppercut Deluxe Beard Balm

Uppercut Deluxe Beard Balm

How long is your beard? Mine is about 7 cm now and it needs a lot of time and some good products to keep it groomed and in shape. If you’re in the same situation and seeking around for a new beard balm, maybe the Uppercut Deluxe Beard Balm is for you!

Last week I went to one of Zurich’s barbers for a beard trim. He finished the session with a product I got pretty amazed about, the “Uppercut Deluxe Beard Balm”. I really liked the product because it gave a good fixation and structure to my beard.

The maker says about Uppercut Deluxe Beard Balm

“With just the right amount of control and shine, Uppercut Deluxe Beard Balm will keep your beard shaped and controlled, reducing those annoying flyaway’s while keeping your dapper and distinguished look in place. No one likes a shiny, greasy beard after all… The best bit – your beard will be left feeling nourished and moisturised.”

Sounds good. And as far as I can say, it delivers.

My problem: the scent

So I took a tube of the “Uppercut Deluxe Beard Balm“, and after using it a couple of times I can say: it has a good texture, and it enables you to shape the beard pretty well. BUT! The enormous(!) intense smell of coconut is just disgusting! After applying the product, it overlays all other scents – after shave, perfumes or whatever – with pure, extremely sweet coconut smell.

I know, it’s a very personal opinion, maybe you gonna like it. But for me – no way! The most intense stage of the coconut smell stays for at least 2 hours. I was not aware of that – at the barbershop, I studied the lists ingredients, but I didn’t pay attention to the fragrance.

Check of ingredients

Contains Aqua, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, glycerin, PVP, glyceryl stearate, cetrimonium, PEG-100 stearate, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, fragrance (parfum), coumarin, citric acid, and tetrasodium EDTA.

PEG-100 Stearate (a polymer) is known as one of the common plastics used in cosmetics.

PEG-100 Stearate is also made with parts of palm oil. Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate and Caprylyl Glycol are possibly made with parts of palm oil. The palm oil production in Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries leads to a massive destruction of the rain forrest.

Pros
- gives good hold
- price
Cons
- contains plastics
- made with palm oil
- massive coconut fragrance
Summary
The Uppercut Deluxe Beard Balm might give a good but not the strongest hold, but with a disgusting smell and plastic ingredients. If you like coconut, try it out 😉 Otherwise, there are better options, especially if you want to avoid the chemical plastic substances.

I got the coconut balm last week once again and I have to say: ME and my beard, we can’t live without it! It s just this tropical smell that makes me feel in the Caribbean again where I come from! If you love coconut you have to try it…
