[Review] Depot Moisturizing & Clarifying Beard Shampoo No. 501, Beard & Moustache Butter No. 502 and Moustache Wax No. 503

Use a beard wash: Depot - The Male Tools & Co. product range

I never heard of the Italian „Depot – The Male Tools & Co.“ brand until I got my hands on this grooming set as a little goodbuy gift from my former collegues. It includes a beard wash, a balm and a moustache wax. Seems like they knew what my heart beats for!

I got this set with the following 3 products:

  • Depot Moisturizing & Clarifying Beard Shampoo No. 501
  • Depot Beard & Moustache Butter No. 502
  • Depot Moustache Wax No. 503

I like the numbering of their ranges – each number stands for a specific area of grooming.

Earlier this year, I reviewed „The Great British Grooming“ products I found in one of our Swiss supermarkets. I still like the scent of this ranges’ shampoo, but I also like to have alternatives. So I was happy to add the new Depot products to my collection. Here are some thoughts about the mentioned items.

Depot Moisturizing & Clarifying Beard Shampoo No. 501

The producer says

„Purifying and moisturizing shampoo specifically for beard. Formulated with delicate surfactants without SLES. Purifies and hydrates the facial hair while helping to maintain the beard. Recommended for daily use.”

What is inside

  • Delicate surfactant, balanced blend of innovative washing agents for an equilibrated cleansing
  • Essential mint oil, toning, refreshing and perfuming
  • Aloe vera extract, restorative, soothing and regenerating the skin
  • Pro-Vitamin B5, regenerating, soothing and conditioning of skin and hair“

My thoughts

First thing you’ll notice (as you do with all cosmetics) is the scent, and I was really happy to smell on of my favorites, which is „mint“. It gives this product a really refreshing appearance while it doesn’t last too long in my beard. While you apply the beard wash it’s nice and cooles a bit, but as soon as you rinse out, the smell is nearly gone to zero (which I like).

The product was made without the addition of micro plastics, which is a big plus, and without SLES (sodium laureth sulphate) which is known for causing irritations of the skin.

This beard wash doesn’t make loads of foam. Compared to my current shampoo, using the same amount per wash, it was like nothing, and the little amount of foam disappeared after some seconds. But what counts is the result and my beard got fresh and soft after the wash!

Does it keep the promises?

Yes. At the end of the day (my day of course), the scent is the decision maker, and I might rebuy this one (also because of the SLES free formula).

Can’t say. It was a gift.

Depot Beard & Moustache Butter No. 502

Depot Beard Balm 302

The producer says

„Nourishing and softening butter for beard and mustache. A balanced set of natural active moisturizes, nourishes, softens and protects the delicate facial hair. It also gives shine and light control.“

What is inside

  • Shea butter, softening and nourishing, protective due to its richness in vitamins and phytosterols
  • Coconut oil, emollient, nourishing and conditioning
  • Jojoba oil, emollient, nourishing and conditioning
  • Sweet almond oil, emollient, nourishing and conditioning
  • Argan oil, emollient, nourishing and conditioning
  • Sunflower oil, softening, nourishing and protective. Rich in minerals, vitamins, unsaturated fatty acids and oleic acid; protective and antioxidant due to its content of vitamin E
  • Black tea leaves extract, natural humectant and antioxidant
  • Vitamin E, an antioxidant and anti-radical

My thoughts

Beard balm is recommended for the longer beard, as it consists of waxes giving shape and shine to the beard. Actually, most if the ingredients of this beard balm are also found in the package I ordered online to create my very own beard balm – most likely the basics of a good balm. This one also contains sunflower oil and black tea – never saw this in a balm before.

The smell is pretty neutral which I really like – it doesn’t disturb my regular perfume choice. There are no added volatile oils (normally creating the scent).

I am using a balm from OAK since some months which is actually a phantastic product and hard to beat when it comes to shine and hold. This one here does a good job as well, but I don’t see a big difference to other average beard balms on the market (except the OAK one of course). It gives hold and a nice shiny finish.

Does it keep the promises?

Yes. It softens my beard, gives shine and light control over the facial hair. But I won’t rebuy as I am going to make my own balm in the future 🙂

Can’t say. It was a gift.

Depot Moustache Wax No. 503

Didn’t test it yet – my Moustache is not long enough.

  1. Hi Matthias, they make also an eccellent product that i use: beard cleaning tissues. Like Hackle (?) but for the beard. They are useful when you travel or going at work and you want to refresh your beard and keep her clean (for example, after lunch). Cheers

  2. Hey Chris, thanks for the tip! I quickly checked – 20 Euro for 12 disposable tissues is a hefty price tag … are they dipped into balm or something ?
